GD Chair demands USAID explain alleged revolution-preparation training

We will preserve peace in our country and allow neither revolution nor the second front, Irakli Kobakhidze, the chair of the ruling Georgian Dream party and leader of the parliamentary majority, told journalists regarding the recent briefing held at the State Security Service and the activities of the Canvas organization.

Kobakhidze noted that the Canvas organization’s representatives had concealed the true purpose of their visit. He highlighted that it became evident during the State Security Service briefing that their primary goal was to prepare revolutionary processes in the country.

Expressing concern, Kobakhidze mentioned that funding for these activities came from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). He called for clarifications on why USAID funded such training, especially when its direct purpose appeared to be planning a revolution in Georgia.

“We will need to get explanations for why USAID funded the training, the direct purpose of which was to prepare for the revolution in Georgia,” Kobakhidze emphasized.

Kobakhidze recalled other activities involving different extremist forces, such as Ackerman training and the Franklin Club.

“Despite the title of the recent training being “non-violent activity,” the discussions revealed a focus on direct violent methods for organizing a revolution. The ultimate goal of the known scenario of chaos and revolution is to establish a second front, which has not been achieved since 2022.

I can say unequivocally that the state will not allow revolution. Georgia is a state, a sovereign, independent state. We will maintain peace and allow neither turmoil nor a second front,” he added.

The State Security Service has disclosed part of the evidence obtained through a secret investigation into the Canvas organization’s activities, which allegedly involved meetings with NGOs and civil activists to prepare for a revolutionary scenario.
