GD Chair accuses opposition of sabotaging vote for HCoJ candidates

The parliamentary majority proposed the opposition nominate their candidates for members of the High Council of Justice (HCoJ). However, the opposition refuses constructive work and wants to sabotage the vote, said the Chair of the ruling Georgian Dream (GD) party, Irakli Kobakhidze.

Kobakhidze claimed that the majority is open to talks in any format. He urged the opposition to participate in the vote if they do not nominate their candidates, thus contributing to “pushing forward” in the fulfilment of the EC’s 12-point recommendations to receive EU candidate status.

According to the GD Chair, the selection of candidates for HCoJ members is likely to take place this week because the adjournment of the vote does not make sense.

“We have waited 12 months, but the opposition has not voiced its stance. There is no point in waiting, and the issue will be put for a vote. Some may vote pro, and some con. If the vote fails, the process will start again. There is still time for candidates to be selected,” Kobakhidze said.
