Gakharia for Georgia party urges Constitutional Court to review its case separately
Gakharia for Georgia party urges the Constitutional Court to review its case separately, the party member Berdia Sichinava announced at the briefing.
According to Sichinava, reviewing the constitutionality of different political parties on an individual basis is the minimum legal obligation and standard that must be met, at least formally.
Sichinava believes the Georgian Dream should explain to voters the grounds and evidence based on which it intends to ban the only oppositional parliamentary party, which participates in all constitutional processes, elections and commission activities.
“Inclusion of the only parliamentary opposition party in the lawsuit confirms that the GD aims to declare different opinions in the country as unconstitutional and ban them with the aim of establishing artificial, rule opposition and creating an illusion of elections with a settled political configuration in the country,” he said.
Berdia Sichinava further noted that the demand to ban the Gakharia for Georgia party is a continuation of retribution against party leader Giorgi Gakharia that started with physical attacks and political persecution in Chorchana and June 20 episodes.
Sichinava stated that the party would continue to fight “not to leave Georgian citizens face to face with the Deram.”
“We will participate in the Constitutional Court hearing for this shameful process to remain documented in the history of Georgia, along with the names of all those who are clumsily attempting to eradicate dissent in the country and establish a one-party dictatorship. Each of them will be held personally accountable, and no one, neither the organizers, nor the leaders, nor any of the accomplices, will be able to escape responsibility,” he said.
The subject of the dispute in the Constitutional Court is declaring unconstitutional the activities of political parties (Unity – National Movement; Coalition for Change Gvaramia Melia Girchi Droa; Strong Georgia – Lelo, For the People, For Freedom!; Federalist Party; Gakharia for Georgia) and banning them.
The Constitutional Court of Georgia will hold a hearing on the lawsuit seeking to declare the activities of five political parties unconstitutional and to ban them on 21, 22 and 23 October 2026.
