Former MEP Anna Fotyga has responded to the presidential elections in Georgia on social media, stating that the anti-European camp is dominant within the country’s ruling structures.
“Micheil Kavelashvili, former soccer player was elected on December 14, 2024, a President of Georgia. The election, following 2017 constitutional amendments, was executed for the first time by a 300-member College of Electors. Kavelashvili was a sole candidate, endorsed by the ruling camp linked to Bidzina Ivanishvili. The vote was boycotted by representatives of the Georgian opposition, including members of the Assembly of Abchasians. In contradiction to popular preferences, the anti-Europe camp has a prevailing position in the governing bodies. The inauguration of the new presidency is foreseen for December 29, 2024. Very sad outcome of processes I monitor in many parts of the world: the will of large, probably prevailing groups of respective populations totally ignored by elites, executing their power via manipulation and fraud. Georgian friends, let me quote the words of the late President of Poland Lech Kaczynski: “Right are those, who fight for freedom”. And they finally win, I am sure,” Anna Fotyga stated.
