Former Adjara Government Chair hospitalised in critical condition after gunshot incident
Former Adjara Government Chairman Tornike Rizhvadze is currently receiving treatment in the intensive care unit at First University Clinic in Tbilisi following a gunshot wound to the chest.
The First University Clinic reports that Rizhvadze’s health condition remains serious but stable. He is currently on ventilator support in the intensive care unit. In a telephone interview with the GPB First Channel, clinical director Lali Turdzeladze stated that Rizhvadze does not require surgery at this stage.
“His condition is serious but stable. He does not need surgery at the moment. He is in intensive care on ventilator support,” Lali Turdzeladze explained.
Rizhvadze was initially admitted to Sagarejo’s Geohospital on July 7, 2025, with a gunshot wound to the chest area.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs confirmed that Rizhvadze received emergency medical assistance immediately after the incident.
“According to doctors’ explanations, his lung was damaged and his health condition is stable but critical,” the ministry’s statement read.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs has launched an investigation under Article 115 of Georgia’s Criminal Code, which covers incitement to suicide. The ministry stated that intensive investigative activities are ongoing in connection with the case.
In a related development, Aleksi Akhvlediani, head of the Maritime Transport Agency, has been detained as a suspect in connection with the incident. Akhvlediani faces charges under Article 238 of Georgia’s Criminal Code, which pertains to the negligent possession of a firearm.
According to available information, Rizhvadze was at Akhvlediani’s residence when the shooting occurred.
