Buk and Javelin systems were not free to Georgia, MoD says

Georgia’s Defense Ministry (MoD) disputed assertions by “certain experts and media outlets” that Ukraine had given the country Buk systems for free. It has also been clarified that Georgia spent tens of millions of dollars in 2017 to obtain Javelin systems from the United States.

The Defense Ministry stated that it obtained Buk systems in 2007 but did not elaborate, stating that this was done “via a classified deal.”

“Georgia is determined to continue offering humanitarian assistance and political support to Ukraine with all available resources. Tons of humanitarian aid has been supplied, including power generators purchased at the Prime Minister’s initiative. In terms of providing Ukraine with weapons and dual-purpose military equipment, the Georgian government has repeatedly stated its firm position,” the ministry said in a statement.

Andrii Kasyanov, Ukraine’s Chargé d’affaires in Georgia, indicated in an interview with European Pravda that Ukraine has demanded that Georgia return the Buk missile systems that Ukraine gave to this nation during the 2008 war.
