Parliament Speaker: Brussels’ policy towards Georgia hits a dead end, resembling a soldier still fighting a war that’s over

“A lie does not become the truth simply because Brussels insists on repeating it,” the Speaker of the Georgian Parliament, Shalva Papuashvili, stated on social media.

According to Papuashvili, Brussels’ policy toward Georgia has reached a complete stalemate, adding that it is high time Brussels snapped out of its world of illusions.

“The statement issued by the EU representative at the UN, repeating the usual disinformation rhetoric regarding ‘arbitrary detentions’ and ‘repression’, reheating well-worn falsehoods, is deeply alarming.

It is concerning that statements by EU officials, not for the first time, stand in stark contradiction not only to the facts but also to the very values and principles the European Union claims to uphold.

It has long been obvious to everyone that violent demonstrations against the Georgian government were funded, in part, by EU money, including campaigns that justified and incited the use of Molotov cocktails. Furthermore, it was precisely following a virtual green light from Brussels that an unsuccessful attempt to overthrow the government was launched last year on 4 October.

Nevertheless, the Georgian people and the Government of Georgia duly defended the country, its freedom, sovereignty, and national interests. Today, it is clear to all that the foreign-funded revolutionary process of 2024 has failed. The fake reality designed to overthrow the government in Georgia has evaporated; yet, those who funded these falsehoods have found themselves trapped inside their own artificial narrative, unable to break free from it to this day.

The false narratives of ‘election fraud’ and the ‘crackdown on peaceful protests’ have been thoroughly debunked by time and reality. The violent crimes committed have been investigated, verdicts handed down, and everything documented, logged, and indeed confessed to by the perpetrators themselves.

Facts have once again triumphed over perceptions. A lie does not become the truth simply because Brussels insists on repeating it, nor does a criminal become a victim just because an EU official wishes it so.

Yesterday’s statement by the official EU representative confirms once again that Brussels’ policy towards Georgia has hit a dead end. Brussels is like a soldier still planning battles for a war that is already over.

It is time for Brussels to step out of its world of illusions. If EU officials genuinely desire to normalise relations with Georgia, they must cease their aggressive rhetoric, abandon providing media support for a failed revolutionary script, and return to the elementary principles of diplomacy: respect for facts, Georgian sovereignty, and the democratic choice of the Georgian people,” Shalva Papuashvili wrote.

The Speaker’s remarks come in response to a statement delivered by EU Deputy Permanent Representative Michele Cervone d’Urso at the 63rd UN Human Rights Council session. Endorsed by Albania, Liechtenstein, Moldova, Montenegro, and North Macedonia, the EU statement urged Georgia to repeal or revise recent legislation, expressing deep concern over arbitrary detentions, the targeting of civil society and opposition figures, and broader democratic backsliding.
