UNM Chair says October 27 rally to nail GD’s political coffin

The Chairman of the opposition United National Movement (UNM) party Nika Melia believes that the October 27 gathering organized by the Georgian Dream (GD) will nail the ruling party’s political coffin.

Melia said the GD leaders are forcing people to attend the rally, but the voters would respond to the GD on October 30 by voting against it in runoffs.

“No political party should have the opportunity to harass a public servant employed in a state institution against their will and push them to various political rallies,” Nika Melia stated.

UNM’s Chair also commented on the government’s ‘obstinacy’ to hospitalize the jailed ex-president to a public medical institution. He claimed that there were numerous examples when prisoners were hospitalized at different clinics. Melia added the ruling team should not be allowed to place the ex-president at the Gldani Prison infirmary.

“Georgian Dream and Bidzina Ivanishvili (former GD Chair) fully bear the responsibility for Mikheil Saakashvili’s health and life. It is impossible to explain why the Georgian Dream is stubborn and why it refuses to hospitalize Saakashvili to the public clinic unless it has any other evil intentions,” he claimed.

The government says that the ex-president will be hospitalized at the N18 Prison infirmary, and no civil clinic is considered. Law enforcers arrested Mikheil Saakashvili in the Georgian capital of Tbilisi on October 1 and sent him to N12 Rustavi prison. Ex-president has been on a hunger strike since the very first day of his arrest.
