Richard Barrett – Georgia is ready for elections in terms of legislation

Georgia is ready for the forthcoming parliamentary elections in terms of the legislation – Richard Barrett, a member of Venice Commission said during an online conference held in the parliament with participation of foreign experts.

Barrett said that he was glad about involvement of the Georgian authorities in handling of hard issues and about low level of infection spread in Georgia.

“The Venice Commission is actively involved in election legislation issues. There is good Code to practice adopted for elections that was published in 2003. One of the main principles outlined in the Code is stability,” Barrett said.

According to the member of Venice Commission, the fundamental principles of election system should not change.

He said that major amendments needed broader consultations including with non-governmental organizations, public and mass media, and should not be only resolved only taking into consideration the private interests of political parties.
