Enguri HPP rehabilitation works finished

Rehabilitation Works at the Enguri hydropower plant (HPP), Georgia’s largest power plant, have finished, Georgian Economy Minister, Natia Turnava, reported on Wednesday.

Minister claims the last full rehabilitation of the HPP was carried out some 15 years ago.

After the rehabilitation of the HPP diversion tunnel, water loss will be reduced by 30-35%, meaning an additional 90 million kWh of electricity generation per year, Turnava noted.

All five units of the Enguri HPP were halted for urgent rehabilitation works in the diversion tunnel on January 20, 2021, during the period when the level of water is lowest in the Enguri.

The Georgian, Turkish and German companies carried out repair works round the clock.

The rehabilitation project cost 45 million euros, financed by the European Commission (EUR 7 million grant) and EBRD (EUR 38 million loan).
