I have two answers for this. If we understand it traditionally, success is when the audience and the critics like your performance and they express that sincerely. This in itself makes you feel like you have success. There’s another way to measure this phenomenon, one that is more personal: In every performance you have a goal, even if it’s very small, and accomplishing that goal can be seen as a success that you sometimes reach and sometimes can’t. It can be really tiny, just one moment, even just one beat, or just some specific feeling. It’s difficult to describe what it is; you just feel it in the music. It’s impossible to say it in words, and you can’t even give it a name.
