Wounded Warriors Week officially opens
Georgia’s Ministry of Defence marks Wounded Warriors Day on June 30 with a commemorative event held at the ministry’s Army Hall.
Opening the week of events, Defence Minister Irakli Chikovani congratulated wounded service members and said the ministry remains committed to supporting their rehabilitation, social protection, and medical care.
Chikovani also highlighted the contribution of Georgian troops to international peacekeeping missions, noting that their service has earned recognition from international partners.
The minister emphasized the importance of public support for wounded service members and referred to the ministry’s cooperation with the Wounded Warriors Support Fund. He also announced a social policy measure under which, with government support, the monthly allowance for wounded service members will be increased by 50 percent.
Commander of the Georgian Defence Forces, Lieutenant General Giorgi Matiashvili, also addressed the gathering, describing the commemorative week as another opportunity to express gratitude to wounded military personnel for their service.
The event featured a photo exhibition showcasing the active lives of wounded service members, as well as a display of medals and trophies won in various sporting competitions. Guests also viewed wheelchairs and sports equipment purchased by the Ministry of Defence for injured military personnel.
Representatives of the Georgian Parliament, the Ministry of Defence, and partner organizations attended the event.
By decision of the Georgian government, June 30 is officially observed as Wounded Warriors Day. The annual observance includes a week of sporting and cultural events aimed at supporting wounded and injured service members, highlighting their achievements, and raising public awareness.
