Vivamed Clinical Director: Clinic staff to ensure refeeding process of Mzia Amaglobeli to succeed

“We will continue Mzia Amaglobeli’s treatment process in the clinical environment, conducting laboratory tests – our medical team will do everything to ensure this process succeeds,” stated Zurab Chkhaidze, the Vivamed Clinical Director.

According to him, the treatment process will continue to prevent the so-called refeeding syndrome, which is associated with renewed nutrition after prolonged fasting.

“I have very good news – you’ve heard Mzia Amaglobeli’s letter, and she has fully taken into account our recommendations that we’ve been discussing these days, as well as our appeal made yesterday to her colleagues. This makes us very happy because we’ve been trying to reach this agreement for all these days. Fasting of this duration is associated with very high risks. After 30 days, various organ dysfunctions can be expected daily, which could have led to very bad outcomes. Today we have a situation that is very acceptable and optimistic.

We will continue the treatment process in the clinical environment, including what relates to the prevention of the so-called refeeding syndrome. This is a very serious syndrome that develops when resuming nutrition after prolonged fasting associated with various metabolic disorders. There can be fluid changes, carbohydrate disorders, and insulin changes, which could cause various organ failures. We will begin this with great caution. The clinic is ready for this, and the medical team will start this refeeding process according to protocol.

The first two days are particularly crucial. A special menu was developed, and a refeeding protocol has been approved. Throughout the week, we will observe and monitor her condition – let’s not make advance predictions. Daily checks of Mzia Amaglobeli’s health condition will be conducted, including laboratory tests. There is always a risk, which is why I mentioned the existence of refeeding syndrome. The medical team will do everything to ensure this process succeeds,” stated Zurab Chkhaidze.

The founder of Batumelebi and Netgazeti media outlets, Mzia Amaglobeli, announced earlier today in a letter that she decided to end her 38-day-long hunger strike. Mzia Amaglobeli, who was detained on charges of attacking a police officer, was sentenced to pre-trial detention by the Batumi City Court on January 14.
