“The Venice Commission’s repetitive digressions rely entirely on analysis based on perception,” Georgian Dream MP Davit Matikashvili said.

MP Matikashvili added that the United States previously withdrew its full membership from the Venice Commission after deeming its direction incompatible with American national interests.

“The US stepped back at a time when leading democratic nations worldwide were adopting appropriate legislation to limit and prevent foreign interference in sovereign state affairs. The Georgian Parliament took steps in precisely this direction, passing a legislative framework designed to prevent such interference. The Venice Commission draws flawed, baseless conclusions without relying on actual facts, once again exposing its unhealthy interest in Georgian legislation,” MP Matikashvili noted.

The Venice Commission issued an opinion evaluating several recently enacted laws by the Georgian Parliament, concluding that the legislative framework hinders party sovereignty and undermines the establishment and survival of a political opposition.
