US Embassy in Georgia congratulated Georgia’s 32nd infantry battalion on their safe return home.
“This is a historic moment that marks the end of the NATO-led Resolute Support Mission. In total, 7,078 Georgian soldiers trained and deployed side by side with U.S. Marines over the past seven years,” the Embassy underscored.
“It has been an honor for U.S. service members to serve alongside their Georgian brothers and sisters in arms, who risk their lives for peacekeeping operations and who represent the firm commitment of the Georgian people to Euro-Atlantic integration,” the statement reads.
The event celebrating the completion of the Georgian personnel’s peacekeeping mission was held at the base of the 2nd Infantry Brigade earlier today.
Service members were awarded Orders of Honor and military decorations, also medals General Kvinitadze and Giorgi Antsukhelidze, for courage and selflessness, as part of the event. The decision to withdraw forces from the Afghanistan mission was made by NATO in April, 2021.
Georgian troops, in line with a schedule agreed with NATO-and in coordination with the country’s strategic partner, the US-withdrew in stages to complete their return home in late June.
Since 2004, more than 20,000 Georgian troops have participated in international missions in Afghanistan, under 107 rotations (ISAF, RSM) on a variety of levels.
