US Embassy: Journalists stand vigilant to inform public and hold institutions accountable

US Embassy in Georgia congratulated journalists on World Press Freedom Day, observed on May 3. The Embassy said in its statement that journalists play an essential role in a democracy; They stand vigilant to inform the public and hold institutions and those in power accountable.

“We celebrate World Press Freedom Day – a day to mark the essential role journalists play in a democracy. Journalists stand vigilant to inform the public and hold institutions and those in power accountable. A free and vibrant press is essential to ensuring “government of the people, by the people, for the people.”

The United States Embassy honors the members of press in Georgia who work to inform the public and hold institutions accountable in the face of violence and threats of violence, politically motivated prosecution and imprisonment, and other pressure. Any effort to undermine or silence the media is an attack on democracy itself,” reads the statement.

On World Press Freedom Day 2023, UNESCO will organize a special anniversary event at UN headquarters in New York, marking 30 years since the UN General Assembly’s decision proclaiming an international day for press freedom.

Celebrated every May 3, this year’s theme for the Day will be “Shaping a Future of Rights: Freedom of Expression as a Driver for all other human rights,” signifying the enabling element of freedom of expression to enjoy and protect all other human rights.
