UNM's Parulava: GD crossed every red line; party ban lawsuit signals dismantling of democracy in Georgia
“Georgian Dream has resolved to ban those political forces and opponents who stand in its way. The constitutional lawsuit, and its expansion, signals that the dismantling of the democratic order is now actively underway in this country,” declared Lasha Parulava, a member of the United National Movement.
Parulava stated that the Georgian people’s resistance is the only thing that will yield results.
“The only party that has staged a constitutional coup in Georgia is Georgian Dream. It has trampled Article 78 of the Constitution underfoot. The Georgian Dream has decided to prohibit political forces and opponents who oppose or resist its initiatives. The constitutional lawsuit and its expansion signal that the dismantling of the democratic order is actively underway in this country. This announcement represents the legal formalisation of that process. We have said on numerous occasions that there is no justice in this country, no independent Constitutional Court. The only path to meaningful change is through the resilience of the Georgian people, and that is the goal we must collectively strive for. Georgian Dream has crossed every red line. The reason for the ban is not the alliance or any particular political party; Georgian Dream wishes to legally entrench oligarchic, neo-monarchical rule in this country, to hand the entire nation over to the Ivanishvili family. That is what this step serves. The lawsuit filed with the Constitutional Court represents a change to the democratic order, its de facto legal formalisation. If the lawsuit previously named four parties, others will now be added to that list,” declared Lasha Parulava.
The Federalist Party is to be added to the constitutional lawsuit seeking the prohibition of several parties. Speaker of Parliament Shalva Papuashvili announced that Georgian Dream will submit the relevant lawsuit to the Constitutional Court today.
For the record, Speaker of Parliament Shalva Papuashvili submitted a constitutional lawsuit on October 28, 2025, challenging the constitutionality and seeking the prohibition of the United National Movement, the Coalition for Change, and Strong Georgia – Lelo. The Constitutional Court published the lawsuit regarding the ban on the three political groups on November 4.
