UNM's former chair disagrees with parliamentary boycott

“We should proceed by accurately perceiving reality and acting on a pragmatic strategy to get the outcome. The suspension of legislative work would be ineffective,” said Nika Melia, former chair of the opposition United National Movement (UNM).

Nika Melia stated on social media that boycotting “would create comfort for the ruling party,” but if the party retains its seats, it should challenge the ruling party from within and cause discomfort. If the party abandons the legislature, MPs should renounce their mandates and fight from outside the parliament.

A day after Tbilisi City Court denied ex-President Mikheil Saakashvili’s request for a postponement or release from prison, his United National Movement (UNM) party has decided to boycott parliamentary work, saying it also considers rejecting parliamentary seats.
