UN General Assembly supports resolution on fossil fuel reduction, Georgia among 141 backing states
A total of 141 countries, including Georgia, voted in favor of a United Nations General Assembly resolution aimed at reducing the use of fossil fuels and addressing the global climate crisis. The United States, Russia, Israel, Iran, and Saudi Arabia were among eight countries that voted against the measure.
The resolution, initiated by the Pacific island nation of Vanuatu, was adopted with broad international support and references a July 2025 advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice on climate-related obligations.
According to the report, the document affirms the need for countries to take stronger action to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and to intensify efforts to combat climate change. While the International Court of Justice ruling is not legally binding, it is increasingly being cited in climate-related legal cases worldwide.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres welcomed the adoption of the resolution, emphasizing continued global efforts to address climate change.
