On 25 September, the Georgia national football team kick off their new UEFA Nations League campaign at home against Northern Ireland. The match takes place at the Dinamo Arena at 20:00 local time, with live coverage broadcast on GPB First Channel.

Georgia’s head coach, Willy Sagnol, has set his sights firmly on finishing top of the group and earning promotion to League A – a goal the French manager believes is well within his team’s capabilities.

“The atmosphere in the squad is great. While some of our players have lacked regular game time recently, the lads are ambitious and determined to win matches and take the top spot in the group.
“I’ve been watching Northern Ireland’s matches and know them well. The key for us will be controlling the ball. We are preparing thoroughly, and I hope we can translate our performances on the training pitch out onto the field,” Sagnol stated during the pre-match press conference.

The Crusaders enter the fixture undefeated in 2026 across four matches, having picked up victories over Lithuania and Bahrain alongside draws against Israel and Romania.

Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland reached the play-offs in the last edition of the Nations League, where a 2–0 away defeat to Italy saw them miss out on a place at the World Cup.

Since then, Michael O’Neill’s side played out a 1–1 draw with Wales, secured a 1–0 victory against Guinea, and fell to a 3–1 defeat against France, a match in which the French fielded a near full-strength lineup.

Dan Ballard is expected to return to the Northern Ireland defensive line against Georgia, stepping in for the injured Ruairi McConville. O’Neill must also decide whether to keep Jamie Donley leading the attack.

The match has caught the attention of British football portal Sports Mole, which predicts a 3–1 victory for Georgia.

“Although Northern Ireland continue to show progress under O’Neill, an away trip to Tbilisi – especially without several key players – presents a daunting challenge. As such, we expect Georgia to secure the win,” Sports Mole writes.

Head-to-Head

Georgia and Northern Ireland have met only once before, in a 2008 friendly, which ended in a victory for Northern Ireland.

Match Officials

An Israeli officiating team will oversee the fixture, led by referee Orel Grinfeld alongside assistant referees Roy Hassan and Idan Yarkoni. Notably, Grinfeld was the referee in charge during Georgia’s opening match of the previous Nations League season, where they defeated the Czech Republic 4–1.
