U.S. Embassy congratulates the Members of Parliament who approved the first reading of Constitutional amendments
U.S. Embassy Tbilisi congratulates the Members of Parliament who today approved the first reading of Constitutional amendments related to Georgia’s electoral system.
As stated in the Embassy’s statement, “it is an important first step towards greater parliamentary pluralism.”
“We hope the amendments will be adopted with broad support, and encourage all sides to fully implement the March 8 agreement,” U.S. Embassy Tbilisi said.
The Parliament of Georgia has adopted the constitutional amendments on the transition to a 120/30 electoral system for 2020 parliamentary polls in the first reading. 136 MPs supported the changes, five voted against the bill. 142 MPs registered to vote.
Independent MPs and opposition factions, except for the United National Movement, took part in today’s vote.
