Traffic to be restricted in Tbilisi for May 26 Independence Day events
Due to events dedicated to Georgia’s Independence Day, traffic will be restricted in central Tbilisi, particularly on Liberty Square and Rustaveli Avenue.
According to Tbilisi City Hall, the restrictions apply to both private vehicles and public transport.
On May 21, from 20:00 to 00:00, and on May 23, from 09:00 to 14:00, traffic will be restricted on Liberty Square, G. Leonidze Lane, Kote Abkhazi Street, and Pushkin Street (from Grigol Abashidze Lane).
On May 24, starting at 20:00, Rustaveli Avenue will be closed from G. Chanturia Street to Liberty Square. Vehicles will only be allowed to move as far as the N. Baratashvili Bridge ramp and G. Chanturia Street.
From May 24 at 14:00 until May 27 at 03:00, Atoneli Street and Vakhtang Orbeliani Street will be closed.
Traffic from Soliko Virsaladze Street and Giorgi Chanturia Street towards the Dry Bridge will be rerouted via Italy Street. Movement from the Dry Bridge to Atoneli Street will remain open via Virsaladze and Chanturia Streets. Vehicles coming from the right bank of Zviad Gamsakhurdia Avenue (via Rena Abzhandadze Street) can access Vakhtang Orbeliani Street and proceed to Mtkvari Street.
On May 26 (all day), Liberty Square, Rustaveli Avenue, Atoneli, and Vekua Streets will be closed. Movement will be allowed on Revaz Tabukashvili, Niko Sulkhanishvili, Mtkvari, Vakhtang Orbeliani, and Gogchi Streets. Traffic will be redirected via Leonidze, Ingorokva, A. Chavchavadze, Griboedov, Baratashvili, and Tabukashvili Streets. Machabeli Street will change direction, and Leonidze Street will be accessible from Lado Asatiani Street. Vehicles travelling from both banks of the Mtkvari River towards Liberty Square will be allowed to reach the start of Pushkin Street.
Movement on Rustaveli Avenue will be limited to G. Chanturia Street. Additional closures include L. Ukrainka, A. Jorjadze, Z. Chichinadze, 9 April, A. Purtseladze, and L. Gudiashvili Streets.
Access to Melikishvili Street and Mtatsminda District will remain open via Janashia, Tarkhnishvili, Tatishvili, Chovelidze, Zandukeli, Barnovi, Gogebashvili, and Kakabadze Streets. From Mtatsminda, drivers can reach Melikishvili Street and the Rustaveli Metro Station via Griboedov, Makashvili, Barnovi, and Shanidze Streets.
Public transport from Merab Kostava to Baratashvili Street will reroute via Mikheil Javakhishvili Street and the right bank of the Mtkvari River. Return trips will use the Baratashvili Bridge and reconnect to Kostava Street via Mikheil Javakhishvili.
Tbilisi–Kojori Highway Buses (N316, N324, N364, N380, N382, N383, N399) will terminate at 11 Amagleba Street and return along the same route. Minibus N541 will terminate at Mikheil Javakhishvili Street and then continue to Heroes’ Square via the right bank.
Buses N344, N350, N371 and Minibus N547 (Gorgasali to Kote Abkhazi) will be rerouted via Europe Square and the left bank, then connect to Baratashvili Street via Baratashvili Bridge.
Buses N337 and N309 (from Avlabari to Kostava) will continue via Baratashvili Bridge to the right bank and proceed along Mikheil Javakhishvili Street.
