Tina Bokuchava: UNM will never be part of a union that embraces anti-Misha positions
“In the same way as we have made a joint decision regarding joining the Opposition Alliance, we will make a joint decision regarding leaving it,” said Tina Bokuchava, Chair of the United National Movement (UNM) party.
According to Bokuchava, the UNM’s joining the Opposition Alliance was at Mikheil Saakashvili’s initiative, not only his involvement.
“Our goal was to consolidate, galvanize opposition-minded people, a healthy part of society, to motivate those people who dislike Ivanishvili and realize that there will be no war and the country will move in the right direction with the removal of Ivanishvili and the regime,” she said.
Tina Bokuchava explained that unification does not necessarily mean readiness for action.
“However, galvanization means taking an action. To take action, you need, among other things, faith in victory and confidence that you can win. For consolidation, galvanization and faith in victory, we joined the Opposition Alliance. In the same way as we have made a joint decision regarding joining the Opposition Alliance, we will make a joint decision regarding leaving it,” she said.
Bokuchava was asked to remark on the statement of the Opposition Alliance, which was not signed by the UNM. Tina Bokuchava replied: “It was not, and it could not be. The UNM will never be part of a union that embraces or anti-Misha positions.”
Ex-president Mikheil Saakashvili wrote in the social network on April 18: “Our path cannot be Hungarian, but should be Georgian. The Georgian people’s path is a revolution. You sit in cosy television studios and wonder why people don’t come to Rustaveli.”
Eight parties of the Opposition Alliance echoed Saakashvili’s statement, saying: “No party has the right to declare itself the sole representative of the protest movement or a single-party or single-person leader.”
On April 21, Georgia’s jailed ex-president Mikheil Saakashvili wrote on Facebook: “Stop using me as your excuse, focus on the real fight; if things don’t work out, don’t blame Misha.”
For the record, on March 2, nine opposition parties announced on forming the Opposition Alliance, which includes the following parties: “Akhali,” “Girchi,” “Droa,” “European Georgia,” “National Movement,” “National Democratic Party,” “Freedom Square,” “Strategy Agmashenebeli,” and “Federalists.”
