Tbilisi Mayor honoured memory of victims on tenth anniversary of June 13 deadly flood
Ten years have passed since the devastating events, a deadly flood that struck Tbilisi on June 13, claiming the lives of 21 people and leaving 2 still missing. To honour the victims of this tragedy, a memorial service was held on the solemn anniversary.
Tbilisi’s Mayor, Kakha Kaladze, accompanied by the chairman of the city council, Zurab Abashidze, Vice-Mayor Giorgi Tkemaladze, other deputy mayors, and members of the city council, attended the memorial ceremony, laid flowers at the site, and paid heartfelt tribute to those who lost their lives.
“Ten years have passed since the terrible tragedy that befell Tbilisi on June 13, 2015. Twenty-one people lost their lives, and two remain missing. First and foremost, I extend my deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims. Reflecting on that day was profoundly difficult, but what stood out was the unity and solidarity shown by all, regardless of age, coming together to support our city. We demonstrated to the world what unity can achieve,” Kaladze stated.
Earlier today, personnel from the Emergency Management Service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs visited the memorial to honour those who perished during the natural disaster.
Firefighters also paid tribute to the victims of the floods that struck Tbilisi a decade ago, adorning the memorial with flowers as a mark of remembrance.
The June 13 deadly flood in Tbilisi claimed the lives of 21 people, leaving two missing and thousands of victims. The 2015 natural disaster destroyed houses, roads, bridges, tunnels, and communication systems in the capital Tbilisi, completely flooding the territory of Mziuri Park and Tbilisi Zoo, killing many animals there.
The disaster damaged Tbilisi infrastructure, the Kojori-Samadlo road, and the Akhaldaba-Tskneti road section.
