US Embassy Chargé d’Affaires visits Lugar Center

US Embassy Chargé d’Affaires Amy W. Diaz visited the Lugar Center last week, the US Embassy in Georgia said.

According to the embassy, during the visit Diaz met with staff of the Lugar Center, the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR), and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

“The US Embassy Chargé d’Affaires Amy W. Diaz visited the Lugar Center last week, one of the best examples of US-Georgia cooperation in the field of public health.

Built and equipped with US support, the Lugar Center is part of a network of 20 biological laboratories established by the United States in partnership with Georgia and fully transferred to the Georgian government in 2015. Today, the center is managed by Georgia’s Ministry of Health and plays an important role in detecting and monitoring infectious diseases. It also supports the professional development of Georgian students and scientists.

During the visit, Amy Diaz met with staff from the Lugar Center, WRAIR and the CDC to learn more about their important work in protecting public health in Georgia. Particular attention was paid to monitoring infectious diseases both in Georgia and across the region.

Their work helps ensure the timely detection of threats and provides information to the US government and its partners, including the Georgian Defense Forces and the National Center for Disease Control and Public Health, contributing to the safety and security of us all,” the embassy said.
