Tamar Chugoshvili: Key actions needed before Georgia considers new elections
“December 29 does not mark the end of anything; on the contrary, more significant processes may begin. That is the key point here. I do not expect new elections to be scheduled before December 29 or transition into an electoral process,” Tamar Chugoshvili, former Vice-Speaker of the Parliament, stated after a meeting with President Salome Zourabichvili, which included representatives of the civil sector and political parties.
According to Chugoshvili, much work remains before new elections can be considered.
“We will need to continue protest actions beyond the 29th. This is no easy task—the fight must go on. It is already evident and widely recognized that this parliament is illegitimate and has exceeded constitutional limits. Personally, I do not believe dissolving parliament and setting a new election date is the right or necessary step.
Before moving toward new elections, many other actions are needed—various forms of protest, greater unity among political parties, and even more creative involvement from public groups. Business plays a critical role in this process. The economy is an essential component of the crisis, and many businesses are already openly expressing their positions. All of these efforts must continue,” Chugoshvili emphasized.
