Education Minister meets National Teacher Prize laureates to outline school reform initiatives

Georgia’s Minister of Education, Science and Youth, Givi Mikanadze, has met with the laureates of the National Teacher Prize from 2023–2025.

During the meeting, the Minister briefed the award-winning educators on upcoming initiatives under the general education system reform, placing special emphasis on structural novelties being introduced for the 2026–2027 academic year.

During the session, the Minister announced the establishment of a new advisory council, composed of National Teacher Prize winners, under the Ministry.

“Together with the educators who have won the National Teacher Prize, we will form a dedicated advisory council attached to the Ministry. This body will convene periodically to share its insights and recommendations regarding general education reforms and planned policy changes. This format will allow the Ministry to stay regularly informed of everyday operational needs and to respond promptly,” Givi Mikanadze stated.

Discussions also encompassed new textbooks, school uniforms, updates to the National Curriculum, measures to improve teaching quality, and mechanisms to support teachers’ continuing professional development.

Mikanadze highlighted Georgia’s progress within the PISA 2025 assessment, stressing the pivotal role that teachers play in securing a marked improvement in the country’s performance metrics.

The meeting was held as an open interactive forum, allowing teachers to ask questions on pressing issues and exchange perspectives with the leadership.

The session was also attended by Deputy Minister of Education, Science and Youth Tamar Makharashvili and the Director of the National Centre for Teacher Professional Development, Ekaterine Khutsishvili.
