Speaker: U.S. Administration expressed willingness of visits, though no date set
“Both the US Administration and our government have spoken extensively, both publicly and informally, about how we feel about restoring relations, which the previous administration completely damaged for the sole reason of wanting to install a submissive government in Georgia,” said Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili.
“When the previous administration failed to reach the goal, it attempted to change the government in an undemocratic way. This led to the breakdown of the relationship, entirely due to the previous administration’s distancing itself from the most loyal partner in this region. This Administration knows what should be done to upgrade the relations to the level they deserve,” he said.
As for visits, the Speaker remarked that nothing is scheduled, and no concrete date is set.
“The Secretary of State’s phone call was intended to confirm the US desire to restore relations and dialogue at the highest level. It is important that we begin concrete work now. Accordingly, the next steps involve communication, be it visits or something else. How can relations be restored in another way? The Minister of Education is paying a visit to the U.S., meeting his colleagues. Other ministers also have visits, and all this is a step forward,” he said.
