Speaker: Parliament's resolution on Ukraine dictated by national interests

“Exactly three years ago, on February 1, 2022, one month ahead of the war, the Georgian parliament adopted a resolution ‘On Possible Military Escalation in Ukraine,’ which the radical opposition did not support saying it was not aggressive enough toward Russia,” wrote Shalva Papuashvili, Georgian Parliament Speaker on Facebook.

According to the Speaker, three years on, those who criticized the resolution and were holding anti-governmental protests for the following weeks with demands to send volunteer fighters to Ukraine or imposition of dual sanctions on Russia, today would have been potential mourners or mourners.

As the Speaker put it, time confirmed that the Georgian government’s policy had no alternative and was dictated by national interests and correct assessment of the geopolitical situation.

“Exactly three years ago, on February 1, 2022, almost one month ahead of the war, the Georgian parliament adopted a resolution ‘On Possible Military Escalation in Ukraine.’ The main essence of the resolution was to express solidarity with Ukraine, to highlight respect for its sovereignty and to call for non-admission of the war.

The radical opposition did not support the resolution saying it was not aggressive enough toward Russia. Recently, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio evaluated the stance of such people, who propagandistically softened and concealed the expected catastrophic consequences of the war, as dishonest. Such a position for Georgian reality would have equaled treason.

Three years on, those who criticized the resolution and were holding anti-governmental protests for the following weeks with demands to send volunteer fighters to Ukraine or imposition of dual sanctions on Russia, today would have been potential mourners or mourners.

Time confirmed that the Georgian government’s policy had no alternative and was dictated by national interests and correct assessment of geopolitics,” he said.
