Speaker Papuashvili: We will use bilateral ties to convince Brussels that fair treatment is the only way forward

“An important official visit was conducted, providing the opportunity to visit Belgium and Luxembourg simultaneously and meet with counterparts, the Speakers of both parliaments, to discuss the concerns held by Georgia regarding Georgia–EU relations,” Speaker of the Georgian Parliament Shalva Papuashvili stated.

He stated that the EU bureaucracy’s efforts have created barriers within the European Union format.

“We explained to our counterparts the perspective through which we view Georgia–EU relations. I am glad there was substantial interest in our positions, and we share common ground with our colleagues that dialogue and fair treatment represent the only correct and truly European path for our relationship. This relationship must return to that constructive track. It is essential that Brussels reconsider its June 2024 decision to unilaterally suspend the European integration process,” Papuashvili noted.

“Bilateral relations are vital. While relations with the European Union operate on one level, bilateral relations constitute a completely different tier and dimension. While Brussels Eurocrats have unfortunately blocked progress within the EU framework, we must not overlook our bilateral ties. Ultimately, the European Union is nothing other than a union of individual member states. Therefore, we will continue our bilateral visits to member states. Through these bilateral relations, we will seek to convince the Brussels bureaucracy that there is no alternative to fair treatment and dialogue,” Papuashvili concluded.
