Speaker Papuashvili: Dialogue with EU member states is crucial; Brussels bureaucracy has chosen an un-European path of confrontation
“Brussels has become a barrier in relations between Georgia and EU member states,” Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili told journalists today.
According to Papuashvili, Georgia must maintain direct communication with individual member nations. He argued that confrontation is fundamentally incompatible with European values—a path he accused the Brussels bureaucracy of taking.
“The European Commissioners’ positions were made clear by their responses. We have seen their approach: they favour boycott over dialogue, which goes against core European values,” Papuashvili said.
“At the same time, we see that individual EU member states express a desire for dialogue between Georgia and the bloc, specifically with its member countries. This is precisely why we have recently stepped up bilateral engagement. Direct communication with member states is essential to stress the necessity of dialogue; confrontation and boycotts are simply not the European way. Unfortunately, the bureaucracy in Brussels has chosen this un-European path.”
The Parliamentary Speaker further stressed the importance of engaging directly with elected national representatives across Europe.
“It is crucial to maintain bilateral communication and dialogue with those who are the elected representatives of their people, so that ultimately Brussels too can be convinced that confrontation is not the European way. It is time for Brussels to return to the European path of dialogue, to openness, the exchange of ideas, and the rejection of confrontation,” Papuashvili added.
