Speaker: Lives of Peter and Paul remind us that faith and devotion are eternal values
Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili said Christianity has been an integral part of Georgia’s history, culture, and statehood, rather than merely a religious choice.
Papuashvili made the remarks in a social media post after attending a liturgy marking the Feast of Saints Peter and Paul at the Monastery of Saints Peter and Paul on Mount Elia in Bolnisi, together with members of Parliament. The service was led by Archbishop Ephremi of Bolnisi.
“The Georgian Church holds the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul in special reverence as the two great pillars of the Christian faith and the Church. Their lives remind us that faith and devotion are eternal values,” Papuashvili wrote.
He said Christianity had become inseparable from Georgia’s historical development and national identity.
“For Georgia, Christianity has never been merely a religious choice. It has become an integral part of our history, culture, and the development of our statehood,” he said.
Referring to the 1,700th anniversary of Christianity’s proclamation as the state religion of Georgia, Papuashvili said the milestone serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving the country’s spiritual and national values that have strengthened the nation throughout the centuries.
He concluded his message by congratulating the public on the Feast of Saints Peter and Paul.
