Speaker: It is important to demonstrate that Brussels approach on Georgia and other candidate countries inconsistent
The Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili stated that during his address at the 152nd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union in Turkey, he will focus on the need for a unified approach to counter external interference.
Papuashvili also noted that discussions will be held with representatives of EU member states regarding Georgia–EU relations and what he described as the current “unfortunate situation.”
“Today is the main day of the Assembly, when we will have the opportunity to hold bilateral meetings, including with the Speaker of the Parliament of Luxembourg and the speakers of regional parliaments. There will also be an opportunity to address the Assembly.
Our key issue at the conference will be the new threats that are clearly visible across countries. All nations are trying to protect their national interests from external interference, and in this regard, I will speak about the need for a unified approach to ensure a coordinated response to hybrid threats.
We will also hold discussions with representatives of EU member states on Georgia–EU relations and the concerning reality we are observing from Brussels. Unfortunately, the dialogue format is being blocked, while a tendency toward unilateral directives is becoming more pronounced.
It is therefore important to engage directly with the parliaments of EU member states and demonstrate that the current approach taken by Brussels toward Georgia and other candidate countries is inconsistent with European values. It is also important for the European Parliament to clearly express its position on this matter,” Papuashvili said.
