Speaker: Government acts in Georgian people's interests

“We act in the interests of the Georgian people,” said Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili.

Papuashvili was asked to remark on the statement by the Russian Foreign Ministry’s Spokesperson Maria Zakharova, saying: Georgia’s accession to the European Union and its joining sanctions against Russia will cause the country to lose its preferential trade relations with Russia and the CIS countries.

According to Papuashvili, the Georgian government disregards whoever says what.

“The Georgian government acts in the interests of the Georgian people and disregards whoever says what. In our 35 years of independence, we are accustomed to the fact that those who have followed assessments of others have not brought any favorable results to Georgia. Since the Georgian Dream is in power and due to the fact that the government does not listen to others’ statements, we have 14-years of uninterrupted peace period and economic progress. We have ensured rapid economic growth and are leaders in the world.

As for trade, Russia trades with the European Union at its wish. Alcoholic beverages, wine, etc. were mentioned. Let me remind you that if there is anyone with whom Russia has unfriendly relations, it is the Baltic States. Lithuania was the leader, ahead of Georgia in wine exports and, accordingly, in imports to Russia. So, I don’t know what the content of the statement means, but we are acting in the interests of our people and what will be good for our people,” he said.
