Speaker condemns forceful actions against people and nations by some post-Soviet EU countries
Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili stated that there is no legal basis for suspending visa-free travel to the EU for Georgian citizens.
Papuashvili emphasised that visa-free travel is supported by an international agreement between Georgia and the EU, which clearly defines rights and obligations.
“There is no valid reason to suspend visa-free travel; however, if arbitrary and unfounded decisions are made, we cannot anticipate them in advance. For instance, the decision to suspend visa-free travel for diplomatic and service passport holders was implemented in a manner that violated the 2010 international agreement between Georgia and the European Union.
They did not cite any legal basis, nor did they provide one from the agreement that supposedly justified the suspension. Unfortunately, this indicates that the rules-based international order is eroding. Power rather than law is increasingly guiding actions. Once again, we observe some post-Soviet EU countries attempting to impose forceful measures against other nations and peoples, rooted in their Soviet legacy,” said Shalva Papuashvili.
