Remains of Georgian Constituent Assembly deputy chair to be repatriated

Remains of Alexander Lomtatidze, deputy chairman of the Georgian Constituent Assembly in the First Republic of Georgia, will be repatriated to Georgia on May 26, said Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili at the bureau meeting on Thursday.

The Speaker thanked Georgia’s Ambassador to Uzbekistan, Zurab Abdushelishvili, and the Foreign Ministry for their efforts in finding Alexander Lomtatidze’s grave.

According to Shalva Papuashvili, many former government members went into exile after the Soviet occupation. Alexander Lomtatidze chose to stay in Georgia and engaged in the anti-occupation movement but was arrested in 1921. He died in Tashkent prison.

Georgia’s Ambassador to Uzbekistan found Lomtatidze’s grave, prepared documents and initiated his repatriation. However, the Covid-19 pandemic hindered the process.

“Today is Alexander Lomtatidze’s birthday, and tomorrow, on Independence Day of Georgia, his remains will be brought to Georgia. Civil Funeral will be held at Sameba (Holy Trinity) Cathedral, and he will be laid to rest at Didube Pantheon,” Papuashvili said.
