Public discussions over constitutional amendments to end in Tbilisi today
Public discussions over the amendments proposed to be made into Constitution will be ended in Tbilisi today.
The representatives of the government, opposition and non-governmental organizations will inform the public about the changes planned to be made into the constitution.
The process will be returned to the parliament after the public discussions. The constitutional amendments will be discussed by the Legal Issues Committee, after which the amendments will be put for voting at the plenary session.
Two draft amendments have been put forward for consideration. One is initiated by lawmakers from the ruling party and the other by an initiative group that has collected the signatures of 300,000 Georgian citizens.
One initiative, drafted by the parliamentary majority, envisages holding the parliamentary elections under the proportional system with the zero threshold and without election blocs by 2020.
Some opposition parties do not agree to hold elections without threshold. However, nonetheless, the parliamentary opposition plans to support the bill.
