Georgia’s Public Defender has expressed concern over narratives appearing in humorous media platforms and programs that reinforce stigma and discriminatory stereotypes against persons with disabilities.

In a statement, the Public Defender emphasized that freedom of expression is one of the fundamental rights in a democratic society.

“At the same time, while exercising freedom of expression, it is important to consider its potential social impact, especially when the subjects of expression are vulnerable groups that already face social barriers due to existing stigma and prejudice,” the statement reads.

The Public Defender noted that humor and media products play an important role in shaping public attitudes, perceptions, and stereotypes. According to the statement, particular attention should be paid to what messages specific forms of expression convey to society and whether they contribute to the reinforcement of attitudes that may lead to the exclusion or discrimination of certain groups.

“Overcoming stigma against persons with disabilities and ensuring an equal social environment is an important obligation of both the state and society. Representatives of the media, the entertainment industry, and other public platforms bear special social responsibility to consider the potential impact of the content they distribute on individuals and groups who are historically or currently in a vulnerable position,” the statement said.

The Public Defender called on public figures and creators of media products to take into account the principles of human dignity, equality, and inclusion while exercising creative freedom.
