Prosecutor: Many individuals detained in the 4 October attempted coup case have applied for plea deals
“Multiple defendants standing trial in connection with the 4 October case have petitioned the Prosecutor’s Office for plea bargain agreements, with negotiations already finalised in certain instances,” prosecutor Roin Khintibidze confirmed following court proceedings on Monday.
Speaking after the hearing, Khintibidze stated that discussions remain active and fluid, declining to disclose specific procedural details while negotiations are under way.
“Some individuals have approached us requesting plea bargain agreements, and every submission received will be thoroughly examined. The negotiation process is strictly confidential and remains ongoing, which precludes me from discussing specific details at this juncture,” Khintibidze said.
The statement comes after defendants convicted in connection with the October 4 attempted coup case, Murtaz Zodelava of the United National Movement and former Georgian Armed Forces Colonel Lasha Beridze, announced their applications for plea bargain agreements themselves during court proceedings earlier today at the Tbilisi Court of Appeals.
On 7 May, the court of first instance sentenced both Zodelava and Beridze to seven years’ imprisonment.
