“The court was presented with compelling evidence which, under the standard of proof beyond a reasonable doubt, established that Alexander Elisashvili did indeed commit attempted terrorism,” stated Ani Khubejashvili, the prosecutor in charge of the case.

According to her, the court fully accepted the irrefutable and consistent evidence submitted by the Prosecutor’s Office.

“The court referenced the footage included in the case files, which clearly captured every single action of the accused. It also highlighted the testimony of eyewitnesses, which was entirely consistent and reconstructed a complete picture of Alexander Elisashvili’s actions. Furthermore, the court ruled that the defendant’s conduct unequivocally constituted an attempted terrorist act driven by a distinct terrorist objective, namely, to destabilise the judicial authority. Regarding the sentencing, the judge explained that the 13-year prison term handed down was entirely proportionate to his actions. The judge also addressed the minimum sentencing guidelines, noting that the defendant had failed to show any remorse at any stage of the proceedings; consequently, he did not merit the absolute minimum statutory penalty,” Ani Khubejashvili declared.

Aleko Elisashvili, one of the leaders of the Strong Georgia–Lelo coalition, was sentenced to 13 years’ imprisonment for an attempted terrorist act relating to a November 29 incident.
