“Our dependence on imports is 29%, if we take electricity and related gas together, for eight months, we have been essentially dependent on imports. During these months, our dependence on imports has already reached approximately 42%,” said Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze in the Open Air programme.
The PM provided insights about electricity imports in the country and emphasized that imports were “increasing.”
According to Irakli Kobakhide, in the case of appropriate use of hydro resources, Georgia could “become completely independent in terms of electricity.”
As for exports, the PM said that “it is possible that electricity exports from the country could increase sevenfold.”
“If we take electricity and the corresponding gas into account, USD 191 million a year outflows from our country. This amount will remain in the country, and if we increase generation appropriately, we can increase our exports seven times. This will positively impact economic growth and the import-export balance, which is not satisfactory. Therefore, this is one of the priority trends we are actively working on,” he said.
