PM pledges to protect citizens' health, restore economy

Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia pledges the government would do its utmost to secure citizens’ health and at the same time reopen the economy.

PM believes maintaining balance is paramount in lifting restrictions as quick relaxation could result in another shutdown.

Gakharia said he is well aware of restriction-related problems for many families or businesses.

“We spare no effort to maintain balance, protect citizens’ health, but also slowly reopen the economy. We have a real plan. School and municipal transport are a priority,” Gakharia said.

The head of the government noted that the plan also envisages tourism recovery for spring.

“We should not rush to achieve short-term, fast results, but strive for a long-term outcome,” PM stressed.

Gakharia also briefed reporters on the vaccination plan and highlighted that Georgia would be among eighteen countries that receive the Pfizer vaccine shortly. He added that the Pfizer vaccine would not be the only vaccine for Georgia.

“We will receive additional coronavirus vaccines in the country in early March. We aim to obtain a WHO-approved vaccine that will not endanger citizens’ health. According to the national vaccination plan, physicians will get the first shots,” Gakharia stressed.

Earlier today, the Georgian government kicked off the gradual lifting of coronavirus-related restrictions. Georgia also resumed international flights.
