Anaklia Port dredging to be completed by December, project director says

“We will complete the seabed deepening by December this year,”  Eric Beyts, project director of the Anaklia Deep Sea Port and a representative of Belgian company Jan De Nul, said regarding the construction of the port.

According to Beyts, the work is progressing according to schedule, and Jan De Nul will deploy additional equipment if necessary.

“We have our best vessels involved in the project, and if necessary, we will add more,” Beyts said.

He explained that the two vessels, Al-Idrisi and Tristao Da Cunha, pump 70,000 cubic meters of sand per day.

“We will complete the dredging by the end of the year. The weather will not hinder us, as these vessels can operate in waves of up to three meters.

“As a result of the wars in Ukraine and Iran, the northern and southern routes competing with the Middle Corridor have been disrupted. The Anaklia port will give new impetus to the capacity of the Middle Corridor. It will be able to accommodate the largest vessels entering the Black Sea through the Bosphorus. From an engineering perspective, Anaklia will even surpass the Black Sea’s largest port, Constanța,” Beyts said.

The Jan De Nul representative also emphasized that the Georgian corridor is a key connecting bridge for stability and security in the region.

“The importance of the Georgian corridor will only increase, regardless of how quickly the wars in Ukraine and Iran end. The northern and southern routes will not regain their former level of trust even years later, because the risks will remain in people’s minds. If Georgia continues on the path of peace, it will remain the preferred route,” Beyts said.
