PM mobilizes defence forces to assist heavy snowfall-affected population

In response to severe snowfall impacting west Georgia, the Prime Minister has instructed the defence forces to assist the affected population.

Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze has signed the necessary order to facilitate this engagement.

“The representatives of local authorities and relevant services are operating in an emergency way to address the challenges posed by the inclement weather and to ensure that the needs of the population are met promptly,” stated the government administration.

Heavy snowfall causes significant disruptions in western Georgia. The coastal city of Batumi, where snow accumulation has reached half a meter, faces serious challenges. The severe weather conditions have severely complicated transportation, resulting in the suspension of municipal transport services and the interruption of educational activities across the area.

The situation is particularly dire in Lanchkhuti, where intense snowfall has rendered typical snow-clearing equipment ineffective, with only machines equipped with iron tyres able to operate. In some areas, even this specialized equipment cannot access the heavy snowdrifts. The ongoing snowfall exacerbates the situation, affecting various administrative units including Atsana, Mamati, Chochkhati, Nigvziani, Supsa, and Ghrmagele. Reports have emerged of collapsed houses in several locations while snow-clearing efforts are underway.

Compounding the difficulties, Energo-Pro Georgia has announced that electricity supply to certain villages in Guria and Kobuleti municipalities is currently restricted. Though district centres and essential facilities maintain a stable electricity supply, many rural communities face challenges in accessing power.
