PM: Migration Department expelled more illegal migrants in past year than in previous ten years combined

“Although things may not appear as they seem, contrary to some politicians’ claims, there are many areas within migration policy that require refinement and improvement,” stated the Prime Minister of Georgia, Irakli Kobakhidze.

According to him, the government is actively strengthening the Migration Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA). From March 1, the legal framework governing the employment of foreign nationals in Georgia will be significantly tightened.

“Primarily, we are bolstering the capabilities of the Migration Department, which has expelled more illegal migrants in the past year than over the previous ten years combined. This enhancement will enable us to eliminate illegal migration, with current figures exceeding 20,000, within a few years. Furthermore, as many are aware, the legal restrictions on foreign labour in Georgia will be markedly increased from March 1, a step aimed at safeguarding the interests of both our economy and our citizens.

The government fully commits to implementing this law effectively. In 2017, we introduced an amendment to the Georgian Constitution prohibiting the sale of agricultural land to foreigners. Protecting and preserving Georgia’s national and religious identity remains one of our most vital national priorities, and the Georgian government will do everything necessary to uphold this,” Irakli Kobakhidze has stated.
