PM Kobakhidze: Tamaz Borashvili will be the first career officer in two decades to lead state security

“We are submitting the candidacy of Mr Tamaz Borashvili to the Parliament of Georgia for the post of Head of the State Security Service of Georgia,” declared Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze during a press briefing at the Government Administration.

According to Kobakhidze, Tamaz Borashvili has served in law enforcement for over 20 years.

“He began his career in the state security apparatus at the lowest entry-level position and steadily rose through the ranks within the Counterintelligence Department.

Between 2017 and 2022, Tamaz Borashvili served in the Ministry of Internal Affairs as First Deputy Head of the General Inspection and subsequently as Head of the General Inspection. In 2022, he returned to the State Security Service, serving as Head of the Tbilisi Main Division of the State Security Department and later as Director of the State Security Department itself. Earlier this year, he was appointed Deputy Head of the State Security Service.

I want to emphasise that over the past two decades, Tamaz Borashvili will be the first career official from the state security system to assume the position of head of the service, which will play an important role in strengthening the system institutionally.

I am confident that the Parliament of Georgia will confirm Tamaz Borashvili with a vote of confidence. I wish Mr Tamaz Borashvili every success in leading the State Security Service of Georgia,” the Prime Minister noted.
