PM: Investigative Commission may lead to lawsuit to Constitutional Court seeking to declare certain political parties unconstitutional
Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze announced that findings from a parliamentary investigative commission could result in a lawsuit to the Constitutional Court seeking to declare certain political parties unconstitutional.
Speaking on Imedi TV, Kobakhidze said the government hopes a legal case will be prepared based on the commission’s conclusions to initiate proceedings on declaring specific parties unconstitutional.
The Prime Minister emphasized the importance of the parliamentary commission in exposing what he characterized as “serious crimes” committed by the previous government.
“Everyone forgets things to some degree, including the gravest crimes of the previous government. Even on an emotional level, any of us might have forgotten a whole series of crimes committed by that regime,” Kobakhidze stated.
He mentioned allegations examined by the commission, including business racketeering, torture, prison conditions, media takeovers, and the 2008 war, describing them as “the gravest crimes.” “We recalled all of this precisely thanks to this commission.”
Kobakhidze also credited the commission with highlighting what he called “sabotage activities” by the same forces during their time in opposition in recent years. “Recalling all of this was very important, and ultimately it’s important to conclude how this regime and this collective political force should be assessed.”
“Based on this conclusion, we hope a lawsuit will be prepared for the Constitutional Court, which will initiate deliberations on declaring specific parties unconstitutional. This is a legal process that must be completed with appropriate results,” he added.
