PM: Initiative on sanctioning Bidzina Ivanishvili without evidence tarnish UK's reputation

“Without evidence or facts, they are discussing sanctioning an individual who has significantly contributed to our country’s democratic transition. Such an initiative will harm the reputation of the UK,” Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze told journalists in Azerbaijan.

Kobakhidze noted that if the British Parliament sanctions Bidzina Ivanishvili, it will tarnish Great Britain’s reputation.

“As for the Political Council’s statement, the situation is clear. A relevant proposal has been initiated in the House of Commons. Should a decision be made to sanction Bidzina Ivanishvili, it will damage the reputation of Great Britain.

Britain is renowned as the cradle of human rights and democracy, with legal acts dating back to the 13th and 17th centuries that laid the groundwork for fundamental rights. Ironically, today, without evidence or facts, they are discussing the sanctioning of a person who played a vital role in our country’s democratic transition.

Even the suggestion of such sanctions undermines the reputation of this historically democratic state in the eyes of Georgian society. This is deeply regrettable and can only be described as tragic,” stated Kobakhidze.
