PM: Council of Europe resolution reflects approach incompatible with traditional European values
“Attempts to blackmail the Georgian people have been going on for a long time, but the Georgian people are not blackmailed. They have gained very strong experience since the early 1990s, and such pressure does not work against them,” Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze told journalists.
The Prime Minister said that if anything is incompatible with traditional European values, it is the approach reflected in the adopted resolution by PACE.
“It is an extremely difficult situation. If you look at the people who initiated the resolution, you will see they have no connection to traditional European understanding. Therefore, if anything is non-European, it is precisely this composition of the Council of Europe and the documents it adopts,” Kobakhidze said.
He added that threats and political pressure are “not interesting” to Georgia, insisting that such tactics have never succeeded in influencing the country.
“We are not interested in blackmail and threats. For a long time, they have tried to use blackmail against the Georgian people, but it does not work. It has never been successful for a simple reason — the Georgian people gained significant experience in the early 1990s,” he noted.
Kobakhidze also confirmed that parliamentary elections are scheduled for 28 October 2028, adding that any opposition participation in parliament would be their own political decision.
“We will hold democratic elections and govern the country democratically until then,” he said.
The remarks came after the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly resolution on Georgia was adopted on 24 June, addressing the situation in Georgia.
