“The capital’s transportation system is unimaginable without the metro. It transports half a million Tbilisi residents and visitors daily. Therefore, our obligation is to ensure the system’s uninterrupted and safe operation,” said Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze at the event dedicated to the 60th anniversary of Tbilisi Metro.
According to Kobakhidze, Tbilisi City Hall renovated the critically vital infrastructure with responsibility.
“Today is a truly historic day for our country. We celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Tbilisi Metro’s establishment. This day reminds us of the most significant period for our city. More than 210 metros operate throughout the world. Tbilisi Metro was the 26th in the world when it opened. On November 28, 1965, the first test train ran on the line, which was a victory and brought pride to every Georgian.
The history of metro’s creation is linked to various political and engineering challenges, hard work and effort. In 1966, the first train began transporting passengers. The metro has evolved like a vital organism since. A Saburtalo line was added, and stations were connected to each other. During our government’s term in office, in 2017, we successfully completed one of the most complex projects in the history of independent Georgia; we opened the 23rd station, ‘State University,’ and restored 3.5-kilometre-long tunnels.
The capital’s transportation system is unimaginable without the metro. It transports half a million Tbilisi residents and visitors daily. Therefore, our obligation is to ensure the system’s uninterrupted and safe operation. Tbilisi City Hall renovated the critically vital infrastructure with this responsibility. The 560 kilometres of power lines and ventilation systems have been completely replaced. The rehabilitation of stations is actively underway, and this process will affect 12 more stations.
At the same time, 111 new carriages of European standards will be added to the fleet, which will make travel more comfortable. 2,800 professionals ensure the smooth and uninterrupted operation of the Tbilisi Metro every day. I congratulate each employee on Professional Day. I express my utmost respect to veterans since Metro’s history is grounded on their work. My gratitude to the acting personnel. It is your merit that this most complex strategic transport operates reliably. Once again, I congratulate you on the 60th jubilee, and I wish you success,” the PM stated.
